Wasicka Post

February 15, 2008

Paul Wasicka (runner-up in 06 WSOP ME, and Reigning NBC Heads Up Champion) made a good blog post a few days ago via PokerRoad regarding certain types of people, and their drive/ambition differences.  He provides an interesting perspective on how to stay motivated and focused in this crazy degenerate game…

Get Healthy, Play Better

February 15, 2008

This might sound a little cliche but focusing on your overall health can really improve your poker play.  Poker is a mental game, requiring emotional stability, patience, and confidence.

Getting into a physical fitness routine is a great way to burn off some stress of the game (or life in general).  This will allow you to return to the felt in a focused manner.  If you are into going to the gym, run on the treadmill or ride a bike for 20min to get the heart rate up, lift some weights to work on getting diesel….if you don’t like the gym just try doing simple things – go for a long walk or jog, walk to the grocery store/bank/whatever errand you need to do.

Another way to focus on your fitness and overall health is dietary/food related.  Eating pizza, chinese food, and microwaveable anything is not a sustainable play.  Since poker is such a sedantary lifestyle you’ll certainly watch your gut grow.

It’s easy to get lazy about your physical condition, but it is also easy to improve your game by focusing on it.  GL.  On that note, check out the home made pizza from last night, it was bomb (use bleu cheese instead of pizza sauce and you’ll love yourself):

Gus Hansen’s Full Tilt Account

February 7, 2008

Apparently Gus Hansen is blogging for cardplayer now, as he accounts the past few weeks on Full Tilt:

Last 2 weeks on Full Tilt Poker looks like this:
Day 1 through day 3: 1 Million
Day 4 through day 6: – 650K
Day 7 through day 14: 1.1 Million

End result: 1.45 million. Pretty good, for a B-student from Noerrebro. For everybody out there with no knowledge about Danish geography, Noerrebro is part of inner city Copenhagen. For everyone out there who has never heard of Copenhagen – pick up a fu**ing map! Read the rest of this entry »

Another Poker Movie…The Grand

February 6, 2008

The Grand The Movie

At first glance, this movie looks like it has a shot of being the first poker movie since Rounders to deserve the attention of poker players and regular movie goers alike.

The Grand – features a solid cast: Woody Harrelson, David Cross, and Cheryl Hines to name a few with a few cameos by Ray Romano, Shannon Elizabeth, and Doyle himself among others…

The humorous approach to poker seems more viable than the ‘serious and/or romantic, completely predictable, cheesy approach (Bond and Lucky You come to mind)…

Make sure you check out the regular trailer on the homepage, and then the R-rated version for comparison (obviously the R-rated is better).

Also worth visiting, icantbelieveigettoplaypokerdotcom777.com – maybe you’ll learn something, or at least beat larry in a game of cards.

Who knows…it could be another bust, but at least its an attempt to make a complete mockery of a game that finds itself taking itself way to seriously at times.  But don’t call us if the movie sucks and you wasted $10bux on it…

PROPs 94, 95, 96, 97

February 6, 2008

Well, unfortunately the state of CA and it’s people decided to ratify these PROPs.  For those of you outside of CA, they are Indian Gaming Pacts that allow for an expansion of the current slot machines, adding 18,000 more units to the existing properties.

It was sold under the guise the ‘California needs these revenues to fund education, firefighters, public systems, etc… because California’s budget is unbalanced.’  It’s unfortunate that really what we’ve chosen to do is tax the generally poorer, less educated americans, by a ‘sucker’ bet.  The tribes spent $100million on advertising these PROPS and it shows what money can buy in this era of tv-controlled democracy.

It may seem odd that a company (such as ours) based on a gambling lifestyle would be against this position.  Well, we may like to gamble, but we recognize some people have a difficult time balancing this stuff with the rest of their lives, and we should exploit that to balance the budget.  There has to be another answer, perhaps raise property taxes, sales taxes, cut military spending, etc….

Go Vote!

February 5, 2008

It is not overly critical who you vote for, however it is critical that you exercise your right to vote!

If you need a suggestion – GO OBAMA OR GO HOME!

Control the size of the Pot

February 5, 2008

Paul Wasicka, a good friend of the PROP team, wrote a nice article about controlling the size of the pot, posted today on fulltiltpoker.com.

The basic premise is that you want to play big pots with big hands, and smaller pots with more vulnerable hands.  Take in to consideration that a ‘big hand’ does not necessarily mean two black aces in the hole against a 8h/9h/10h board…

Some people may read the article and say it is a weak/passive play – and sometimes they’d be right – but it is also a lower variance style, which for some people works better.  There are certainly different ways to skin a cat or fish…

Training Sites and the “Correct way to play”

January 30, 2008

What’s your take on the various video sites out there?  Cardrunners, PokerXfactor, PokerVT, PokerSavvy, the list goes on and on…

I like what Phil Ivey said something to the effect of ‘you have to play your own game.’  That requires putting in hands, learning people’s tendancies including your own (which may vary by level and site), and learning how to exploit those tendancies to make a profit. Read the rest of this entry »

This is your brain. This is your brain on poker.

January 24, 2008

Alright so we know Dutch Boyd has always been a little crazy…but someone please jump in and save himself from jumping off a bridge somewhere, or at least hide the twinkies.

As further evidence to poker’s destructive tendancies, view a recent photo of Dutch at the WPT Poker Open:

scary dutch

compare that to a photo of a much more exuberant dutch in 2005:

 skinny dutch

Jeezus….someone please get this man some sunshine and a little physical exercise.

Poker Academy Prospector

January 23, 2008

Check out this cool new product by Poker Academy, called Prospector.

Here’s the skinny: It’s a prettier and more dummy proof version of Poker Tracker. It helps you analyze your play, and show you visual graphs of your tendancies. It can ‘recommend’ the ‘proper’ way to play, and identify and obvious leaks in your game. Matt uploaded 100k hands into the software. He said it was really easy to use, and very intuitive. He was going to do a brag post but the graphs made him realize he’s a donk and should retire. Weeeeeeee.

From their site the Prospector does the following:

1. Track your bankroll

2. Pin Point Leaks in your game

3. Analyze your play and your opponents

4. ‘Dont get left behind’

Your girlfriend hates poker

January 16, 2008

Guess what? Your gf hates poker, and is starting to hate you.

You aren’t alone. Lots of poker players have to deal with this. “I think you have a problem..” crap. Chances are, you do have a problem. Lol. That what makes poker such a sick game.

Those that recognize the problem have three choices:

1.try to become a winning player by playing often and studying the game but spending copious amounts of your bankroll on flowers, dinners, make up sex (or pull a Chad Brown and date a cute pro – but this is not recommended as these volatile relationships have as much of a chance for success as Will winning at the Baccarat Table @ the Wynn).

2.realize you just aren’t going to be the next Phil Ivey and keep it casual, playing when your gf isn’t around, keeping the stakes smaller and less stressful, or

3. destroy your relationships and lose all your money in the process, becoming broke and depressed working at McD’s thinking about what could have been…Whatever you do don’t do #3.

Most of us fall somewhere around #2 (in terms of poker potential). Be honest with yourself. Poker is a game. If you are good, get better. If you’re donk – embrace it and keep it casual. Weeeeeeee.

Live in a bathroom for 30 days = $100k

January 16, 2008

PROP bets can be incredibly fun, incredibly stupid, incredibly smart, incredibly profitable…I’m not sure I’d want to live in a bathroom for 30 days though. Read about this guy, ‘bellagio jay’, who’s spending a solid month in a fine private Bellagio bathroom for a shot at 6 figures.

Who knew? Yoonew.

January 14, 2008

What’s on second?

Poker, by all accounts, is a lot like trading stocks.  You have to evaluate the risk/reward of each decision and then act within an appropriate amount of time.  Well, a few folks at a site called www.yoonew.com have decided to take it to another level.  This time, involving sports tickets.

Basically, the site allows users to trade ticket ‘derivatives’ or ‘futures’, and it seems to be a rather efficient model…meaning you can buy your Buffalo Bills playoff tickets in August for a steal.  And when they bust out in flames, failing to make the playoffs, you don’t get hurt too bad.

Weeeeee.

Fold Equity

January 10, 2008

What is it?  And why should you care?

Well if you happen to play tournament poker, well any poker for that matter, but especially mtt’s…this is a concept you must understand and fully exploit.

Without getting too technical, fold equity is value that is created by a players likelihood to give up a hand or pot under the right conditions combined with your gained value from accumulating those chips.   Ever notice how many players will begin to tighten up their butt cheeks more than an unflowered 18 year old girl when the tournament money gets within reach…what?  I digress.   Read the rest of this entry »
