Hoodies for Homeless – Part 1

December 20, 2007

We wabbit huntin….

Just a quick update on our Hoodies for Homeless Giveaway in San Francisco:

Finding ‘qualified homeless people is hard’ – The plan has been to give 25 hoodies, to 25 homeless people, for the 25 days of Christmas.  The reason for this was not to be overly sympathetic or charitable to the homeless, but rather gain a little perspective into what it is like to not have a home and how they got in the situation to begin with.

Since only 25 hoodies were going to be given away, Matt decided there had to be a few qualifications… 1. No cracked out folks (for two reasons, personal safety, and the lack of ability to have a conversation).  2.  No groups of people (to avoid some people in the group feelling left out).

This makes finding 25 homeless people, slightly more difficult, especially in the allotted time of 2 days.  Factor in 85% of homeless people have a mental illness, then you add in the SF weather, downpour for 1/2 of one day, and you have an incomplete giveaway…

Matt had to jet off to NY for the holidays, so the rest of the work will get done in January as belated gifts.

In part 2 of the story, we’ll go into some detail on the stories these people have, along with add a few pics of the adventure…stay tuned.

Poker Road – Thumbs Up!

December 11, 2007

We know you are all thirsty for some ‘pokertainment’ and it just so happens that Mr. Joe Sebok and company, aka Greenbok Productions (Also known as Barry ‘the Bear’ Greenstein and his son Sebok), are producing some highly entertaining content available on the web.  The site is called www.pokerroad.com.

Be sure to check out the radio show called Big Poker Sundays featuring the smart and unfiltered Harallabob and the quick wit of Scott Huff.  They talk about everything except poker strategy i.e. gossip, sports betting, random scuttle.

There are some interesting video interviews on ‘Inside the Poker Mind’ with Sebok’s girl, Amanda Leatherman (pretty cute, look out sebok we got some lookers on the PROP team and ain’t scurred) with Negreanu and JC Tran.

Nice work guys.  Making the poker world a more interesting place, one stupid joke at a time.

Cheap Music – iTunes sucks

December 10, 2007

There is no need to go into a tremendous amount of detail as to why iTunes sucks, but if you would like to ‘pay’ for your mp3s and don’t feel like searching through bad copies and what not, check out www.gomusic.ru – full discs are like $2.

High Stakes Swings

December 10, 2007

From the highstakesdb.com:

FULL TILT POKER
We’ve had alot of action in November and  the player who gave us most action was Gus Hansen. He started the month down about $500k but he managed to come back, he won almost $2 million in just a week and his totalt results for the month was +$1,3 million

We didn’t have so much Texas NL action this month, we had some insane sessions with the player Tie53, he had some sick swings, was down about a million but then he won a couple of sessions so his total loss was “only” -$340k on the sessions we monitored. The winners on Texas NL on FTP was Genius38 (+$354k) and Trex313 (+$299)

PRIMA
Still pretty calm on the prima network in November, but it’s always some good action on the $50/100 tables and copi_rules (+$234) and kriga (+$173k) was the winner on the sessions we monitored.

LADBROKES
We had alot of action on $25/50 and $50/100 on Ladbrokes this month and we had another danish player in the top. Pokergirl1 won $247k and most of this money was on $25/50.

Power to the Poachers!

December 7, 2007

So, I’ve spent the majority of my life snowboarding…I remember the days when snowboarding wasn’t allowed most places.  It was certainly discriminatory, and in my opinion, one of the few things (outside of it being easy to learn, and insanely fun) that helped propel the sports growth.  Doing something that is ‘outlawed’ is fun, risky, edgy, punk rock, whatever.  Poker is kinda like that, a bit counter culture, certainly more liberal than conservative…I digress.

Burton has a cool promotion going on right now for people to publish videos of themselves ‘poaching’ the few remaining resorts that don’t allow snowboarding.  The site claims four resorts, although I don’t think they are including all the private resorts out there…

Win $5k…go break some rules, and then film it: http://www.burton.com/poachers/Default.aspx

Cheers,

Matt

Ghosting and Account Selling

December 6, 2007

Recently, there was yet another online poker scandal, where the winner of a big tournament was caught cheating and had to forfeit his winnings…this time it involved a practice known as Account Selling.

Account Selling, is becoming a somewhat popular option for people who get deep in the major tournaments.  It means exactly what the term would imply, a person deep in the tourney sells their account ‘temporarily’ to a more experienced tournament player to finish it out.  Often the deals will be negotiated for a certain % of the final cash, or sometimes a flat fee.

This most recent scandal involved Sorel Mizzi (aka Imper1um, ranked in top 5 on pocket fives), and Bluff Magazine Editor Chris Vaughn.  You can read all about it on Poker News @ http://www.pokernews.com/news/2007/12/online-poker-sorel-mizzi-chris-vaughn-speak-one.htm

Ghosting – is another popular ‘cheating’ method used online today.  Basically, another person shadows your play, and watches you, while at the same time, hearing what cards you have (via cell phone, or im, or in person) advises/coaches you on what to do.

Both practices are difficult to police.  At least account selling can be traced to logging in/out of the site…GG online poker.

R.I.P. Chip Reese : 1951-2007

December 4, 2007

He was a guy who always carried himself with class.  It is a sad day for poker.

From cardplayer:

One of the Greatest High Stakes Cash Game Players Passes On

David “Chip” Reese, the three-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner, long-time cash-game star, and member of the Poker Hall of Fame, has died. He was 56.

Card Player has learned that Reese was admitted to a hospital last night with symptoms of pneumonia and passed away in his sleep.

Reese, the Ohio native who learned to play poker while attending Dartmouth, was a regular playing in the highest cash games and wad considered the best seven-card Stud player in the world. Doyle Brunson held Reese’s play in such high regard that he pegged him to pen the chapter on Stud for his book “Super System.”

He affirmed his position as one of the world’s best all-around players in 2006 when he won the $50,000 WSOP H.O.R.S.E. event ($1.785 million). He also won bracelets in 1982 and 1978 ($5,000 Limit Stud and $1,000 Stud split).

Switch Tables

December 3, 2007

Table selection, especially online, can be one of the most profitable things you can do while playing poker.  Sometimes we let ego get in the way, we start losing a few hands, maybe someone has just been holding over you and you ‘know’ you can beat him.

Beating him (or her) is highly irrelevant, remember the main point to any poker game is to maximize your return on investment.  Note: while some people play the game for pure fun (whereby their investment is mostly emotional, and beating that person may in fact be the greatest return), most of us, especially the degenerate ones, play to make money.

So, the point is, if you find yourself at a tough table, and certainly it happens from time to time, don’t let your ego get in the way.  It’s ok to get up and find a new spot.  And rather easy to do online, with a simple click of the mouse.  You find even great players do this – Brian Townsend aka sbrugby recently posted a blog in which he described playing an opponent in PLO/8 who was beating him badly.  He has made a conscious decision not to play him again until he has had a chance to review the previous sessions and identify some weaknesses or leaks in his own game.  He’s smart, and eliminating the ego from the equation.

Bellagio Update – Will cashes again, Dapo just missed.

December 2, 2007

Congrats to Will for placing 17th out of 231 in Friday’s Event #4 $3000 buy-in NL tourney at the Bellagio 5 Diamond Poker Classic.  He cashed for the second time this series, for a $6495 payday.

Dapo had the unfortunate luck to bubble in this tournament, but is really starting to build his confidence going into the bigger buy-in tournaments next week and the $15k in about two weeks.

Friend of the PROP team, Francois Safieddine had a nice result in this tournament finishing 6th.  GG guys, keep up the good work.
