Restealing gone wrong

October 12, 2007

Related to our post yesterday, you can see an example of a resteal attempt gone wrong @ the final table of the 2007 WSOP.  This hand featured a battle in the blinds with SB – Jerry Yang and BB-Lee Watkinson:

Yang raised to 1.5mil with A/9o.  He had been the most active player at the table by far, and had a dominating chip lead.  Watkinson with A/7o decided he wasn’t going to get run over by the chip leader and thought this was a good spot to steal so he reraised allin for about 8.5mil more.

Under the discussion of restealing from yesterday a good point was made about attempting resteals against very large/very small stacks as they have a higher likelihood of calling because ‘they can/need to gamble’.  Read the rest of this entry »

Worst Movie Ever – Un – Lucky You

October 8, 2007

Ok, so I’m not sure how I got suckered into watching this movie last night but….DON’T!

The poker playing is laughable, the scenes are predictable, the poker player cameo’s are non-eventful.  And to make things worse, Drew Barrymore is one of the stars.

I think the movie had good intentions, but it is no Rounders.  Not by a long shot.  So save yourself the $3.95 on pay-per-view, and rent some other dumb romantic comedy your girlfriend wants to watch.

Cheers and GL,

Matt

Poker Tip – The Rut

October 7, 2007

Sometimes when you’re grinding away, at whatever limit you are playing, you develop some bad habits.  We call this ‘the Rut’.

It’s kinda like working out, when you do the same exercises over and over, the same routine, your body stops getting stronger – it has gotten used to the activity.

Poker is the same.  To grow as a poker player, you need to challenge yourself.  Read the rest of this entry »

Poker Bowl – Begins October 20

October 2, 2007

The inaugural Poker Bowl, which was created by the U.S. Poker League, kicks off October 20 at Bally’s in Las Vegas.  Unlike other team-base poker tournaments, this one actually puts team members on the felt at the same time.  PROP players, Dapo Fadeyi and Will Lin will be competing alongside a great team (which we’ll announce when we can).

Poker Bowl I will feature 25 teams (five teams in five conferences) playing in a series of tournaments.  Each conference will send its champion to the Poker Bowl Finale, to be held on October 23.  This Finale starts as three ten-handed single-table shootout tournaments, in which each team will have two players represented at each table (each team has a total of six players).  When each table is down to three players, they will be combined into one nine-handed final table.

The last team to have at least two players remaining (the “team winner”) will advance its top three finishers to the playoff table.  The winner of the final table will also advance, along with his team’s other top finisher.  These five players will then battle it out, trying to eliminate the other team.  The team that survives will be declared champion of Poker Bowl I.

If the winner of the final table (before the playoff table) is also a member of the “team winner,” there will be no playoff.  That team wins by default.

The buy-in for the event is $8,000 per person, $40,000 per team.  The total prize pool will be $1,000,000.

Poker Tip: Table Selection

September 30, 2007

One of the best ways to maximize your ROI (return on investment….) in poker is to sit at a table in which you have an advantage.  Sounds easy right?  Well… it is pretty easy.

The value of a buck.

September 24, 2007

Poker players, especially the professional types, find themselves completely disconnected with the value of a dollar.  Playing poker, often with hundreds or thousands of dollars on the line, makes that $100 dinner not seem like a very big deal.

Here is a good article, on pocketfives.com, related to the value of a buck.

Greg Raymer wins WCOOP #6 on Poker Stars.

September 18, 2007

The big guy with the dinosaur glasses did it again, and won a World Championship of Online Poker Event #6, the pot limit omahi w/rebuys event on Poker Stars.  There was no report if he actually wore the glasses during the event.

Apparently when the two final players, Raymer and the chip leader O.Mustang, made it heads up they tried to negotiate a chip deal.  While the terms of the attempted deal are not available, all we know is no deal was struck.  O.Mustang ended up refusing the ‘unfair’ deal, and also ended up taking second.  Oh well, gg.

Other results and cashes:

1. Greg ‘FossilMan’ Raymer $168,362.40
2. O.Mustang $97,022.40
3. MrSmits $64,919.40
4. rutasasha $49,938.00
5. -db- $40,663.80
6. PlayaAAK8 $32,103.00
7. Rsa87 $23,542.20
8. Rage Of Fury $15,694.80
9. Oswaldo $9,274.20

Annette_15 – Wins WSOPE and £2,000,000!

September 16, 2007

Wow!  Already an online multi-table-tournament (mtt) legend, Annette Obrestad has just proven herself on a global stage, winning the 2007 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event.

This event was a £10k entry, with first place receiving £2m!  That’ll certainly help her online bankroll…

From Poker News – the final hand played out like this:

John Tabatabai has the button. He calls, Obrestad raises to 100,000 and Tabatabai calls. The flop is {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{5-Hearts}. Obrestad bets 250,000, Tabatabai raises to 750,000, Obrestad moves all in and Tabatabai calls. Tabatabai shows {5-Spades}{6-Diamonds} for two pair, but Obrestad has top set with {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}. The turn is the {2-Clubs}, and Tabatabai is drawing dead. The river is the {Q-Hearts}. Jack Effel pauses play to count down the stacks to see if Tabatabai is covered by Obrestad. She does, and Annette Obrestad wins the 2007 WSOPE Main Event, earning £ 1,000,000! John Tabatabai is our runner-up and will take home £ 570,150.

Poker Health Tip – Control Your Tilt

September 10, 2007

Often while playing online, we come across those individuals that completely ‘lose’ it at the table – cursing, beraiding others for their ‘bad’ play, moaning about all the bad luck they have, etc.  You know the type.  We have a recommendation for them: either a: move down in limits so it isn’t so painful, or b: quit playing all together.

Neither choice is all that appealing to someone stuck a few hundred or a few thousand at a time, but it is a necessary choice.  Playing successful poker requires a calm emotional state – to think clearly about the game – at a higher level than the ‘average’.  Generally, playing successful poker will result in you getting ‘sucked out on’ more often than you do it to someone else.  So don’t let that next unlucky hand set you off.

It all hinges on being able to put it all in perspective. Read the rest of this entry »
