The Scoop – Cardplayer TV

August 13, 2008

Will someone please explain to ‘Diego’ how to conduct a proper interview. Good God. His questions are awful. Run-on sentences. Using opinion and statements as the question. Talking more than the person he is interviewing…SHUT UP and let the guest talk. He really is painful to listen to. Watch the most recent interview with Justin ‘zeejustin’ Bonomo. It’s ridiculous. Bonomo is smart, and has good things to say…this Diego character is a joke.

I think he just gets nervous or something, but just starts rambling. Do yourself a favor, skip this show, and listen to pokerroad.

Diego reminds me of:

Excalibur Las Vegas – All Digital All the Time

August 12, 2008

Vegas Strip casino Excalibur, famously known for its medieval theme, cheap rooms, and bad food, is making way for new and innovative electronic tables from PokerPro. As of 2 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, the poker room doors will close to reopen on Aug. 21 or Aug. 22 with a whole new look.

Twelve PokerPro electronic tables are to be installed, completely replacing all dealer-required tables. While game selection is still being worked out, Neil Bard, floor manager for the Excalibur and soon to be poker host of the new room, says that both tournaments and cash games will be offered. “I’m excited to see the turnout,” says Bard. “We are going to have several famous poker pros come to help launch the tables.”

PokerPro tables are made by PokerTek, the leading manufacturer of electronic tables. According to PokerTek’s website, the PokerPro System can increase the number of hands dealt in Texas hold’em by 50 percent and 100 percent in Omaha by eliminating the use of cards and chips.

While playing in LA, I’ve come across these tables at two venues, Hustler and The Bike.  In my experiences, just playing SNGs, it did not speed up the game, mainly due to peoples relatively hopeless technological savvy.  I’m sure this will decrease as people become more familiar with the format.  The pros: no dealer errors, hypothetically less cheating, no money exchange mistakes.  The cons: no chips to neurotically play with, no chips to ship, no cards to twirl expertly into the muck, and no mountain of chips to stack after raking a huge pot.

Eh.  I’m indifferent to this ‘digital launch’.  When I go to Vegas…I want the real deal, life poker experience.  For now, I’ll keep the digital to my laptop.

WPT Foxwoods – lol10kaments

August 12, 2008

So I just watched the 2008 WPT Foxwoods poker tournament….I lol Andrew Barta’s 3bet allin shove, 3 handed, and $300k difference between 2nd and 3rd place.  He had about 350bb and AQo vs. equal chip stacked Eric Seidel on button, who had JJ and opened for about 2.5x (who had just raised 3 hands in a row).  The guy in 3rd place had half as many chips.  So Barta just decided to go off and got impatient. Nice call from Seidel, but jeezus.  AQo AIPF for 350bb at final table?

In other news, thanks and congrats to the lucky few that got a free PROP shirt on wednesday.  I like doing random giveaways.  It’s hopefully a little pavlovian in nature.  We’ll probably do another random promotion in a few weeks…so stay tuned!

080808 Cometh – Olympic Post

August 6, 2008

I’m getting excited for the olympics to kick off in Beijing two days from now.  I’m not sure if I’m looking forward to the games as much as the potential story lines coming out of censorship-ridden China.  To date, the Chinese government has restricted use of automobiles around the city to try and reduce the gross smog, they are shooting chemicals in the sky trying to change the weather (August is rainy in China), they are putting up propaganda flyers advising locals to not speak to foreign olympic tourists regarding chinese culture/history, and going to various other lengths to censor the media and message coming out of their country (like censoring the internet).

On a less communist slaint, check out this cool interactive map from nytimes.com on the history of medals won at the olympics, by country and year:

Some of the Interesting Years: 1904 – US Dominates!, 1980 – US Doesn’t Show Up in Moscow, 2004 – Countries all over the world are developing better athletes.

Where in the world is PROP?

August 3, 2008

Just received an email from a friend that goes by the name of Mr. C.  He’s out in the U.K. and publishes a poker blog.  He sent us a photo of him rocking the PROP Cash T during a recent adventure.

The description of said adventure is as follows:

“…this was the night after our final exam and we get extremely drunk and decided to blockade my friends front door with every bin on the street, fun times.”

Classic.  Keep up the good work Mr. C.

Life and Jelly

July 25, 2008

Poker is cool.  Being able to play poker to pay bills is also cool.  Unfortunately, there are some consequences to this profession.  I’ve mentioned before about the ‘opportunity cost’ of playing poker.  Most poker players think along the lines of the time spent NOT playing poker, is “X”bb/100 or $X/hr down the drain.  This is a perfectly accurate and logical thought, but it can dangerous for the bigger things in life.

If you can make 500k playing poker this year, well a: your probably not reading this and b: I’m not really talking to you.  But if you are grinding the micro stakes, looking to build your roll, and come up through the ranks…listen up.

Playing poker for a living can often be like chasing a ghost.  You have wins here and there, you study, you practice, you talk about hands with friends, you watch videos on Cardrunners.  At the end of a successful year, lets say you are up $15k.   Read the rest of this entry »

Poker After Dark – The internet whiz kid edition

July 22, 2008

I just watched the first episode of Poker After Dark featuring Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, Huck Seed, Tom Dwan, Brian Townsend, and Andrew Robl.

Interesting Observations/Opinions:
-Johnny Chan cautiously plays JJ utg. Limped, ckd behind Durrr on 7/7/4 board, flat called Durrr on turn, flat called river. He’s made this play on tv a bunch, folding AA on pair boards to strength, ck calling KK’s and AA’s OOP. He doesn’t want to go busto with these hands, and keeps the pot as small as possible when out of position and during early levels of tournies.

– Internet Connection – on a lot of the hands, the 3 ‘internet’ kids generally looked around, mostly toward each other, seeking approval or reaction on the hand that just went down. Probably a carry over from the instant message habit – always looking for other thoughts on a particular hand. Most of the expressions were ‘Did you just see that?’ or ‘What kind of line was that?’

– KQ suited in position – K/4/3 board, Dwan preflop raiser, ck raised flop 3x ish, Robl called in position, 8 turn, Dwan bet again, Robl lost in the hand, calls again. Dwan value shoves on river J, hoping to get a call from AK or KJ…Robl folds the KQ, loses half his stack – Dwan shows a 3, and “looks like he’s gonna puke” so says Ali-wood Nejad. Eh, marginal spot from Robl. But it’s easier to say when you can look at all the hole cards.

– Old guard v. New Youth – interesting dynamic, and it generally seems as the older players are looking to play cautiously hoping the young ‘reckless’ players make big mistakes on later streets. I’m not sure this is the best strategy against a guy like Dwan – who is looking to play flop, turn, river as well. But I guess it depends on who the favorite is on the flop…and that depends on position most of the time. Young players are tough to play against because they haven’t gotten comfortable with money/fame/status type stuff yet. Dwan recently said in an interview that given 3/1 odds he would risk 1/2 his bankroll on that gamble. Logic being: if the shot doesn’t work, he can always grind back the 1/2 he lost, with minimal risk of going busto. You need gamble in you – or else you become predictable.
